Geographic Information
Panama is the southernmost country in Central America. It is approximately the size of South Carolina. It borders Columbia to the east and Costa Rica to the west. Panama is approximately 50 and 120 miles wide and is bound on each side by 477 miles of Caribbean and 767 miles of Pacific coast line. One of Panama's biggest geographic advantages is that you can access two oceans in a short amount of time. Many surfers will check the swell in both the Pacific and the Caribbean before deciding where to surf for the weekend. With two oceans to play in and explore, Panama offers excitement for sailors, divers, fishermen and adventurers.
The Panama Canal is Panama's most famous geographical attraction. It is approximately 60 miles long and divides the country into eastern and western regions. There is a large mountain chain that stretches throughout the center of the country. The highest peak is called Volcan Baru near Costa Rica. The town of Boquete sits at the base of this mountain. Take advantage of cool temperatures and beautiful views as you hike through lush forest in these areas. River rafting is also a favorite activity for the adventurer in Panama. With over 500 rivers, there is always a new river to explore.
